Medication Banner

Everyone probably needs to take medication at one time or another, sometimes temporarily, but possibly for a lifetime
Medications      It is very important that you understand why your medication is being prescribed and that you take it exactly as instructed. This is important because your medication has been prescribed to treat your current illness. In many cases, a patient's failure to take medicine as prescribed will result in a more serious (and costly) condition. Make sure you understand your doctor's instructions before you leave the office.

Understanding The Prescription Label

Medicine Bottle      The label on your prescription includes the date, prescription number, the name of the medication, the dosage, and how often it is to be taken. The pharmacist may also place stickers on the container with special instructions or precautions.
Also, ask your pharmacist to review medication directions for your prescription before you leave the pharmacy. Be sure you understand the instructions on the label.
Later, if you forget, or have additional questions, write them down and ask your doctor and pharmacist.

The Importance of Compliance

When you are taking your medication exactly as directed by your doctor, you are in compliance. Some medications should be taken with food, others on an empty stomach. Some medications must be taken three or four times a day, others once or twice a day, and some only as needed.
Pills      Whether your doctor is treating you for a sudden illness or for a chronic condition, such as high blood pressure, your medication must be taken exactly as directed. Try not to miss a dose no matter how you feel. If you are concerned about how you feel, call your doctor or pharmacist immediately for advice.

How to Improve Your Compliance

Everyone occasionally forgets, but -- organize a system to take your medication exactly as prescribed. Your pharmacist can suggest ways to keep to a routine and tell you what to do if you miss a dose:
  • Use a calendar or chart to list the times, dosage, and special instructions of medication to be taken each day. Keep it handy.
  • If you take more than one medication at a time, color-code the chart to the pill color.
  • Cross out the time or make a check mark as you take each dose.
  • Use an alarm clock or watch alarm or regular external time sounds like bells or sirens.
  • When activities change your routine (like shopping or vacationing) you must remember to bring your medication and take it on time.
